Top 10 Scariest Video Game Music Tracks

Hello guys, it's time for something a little different. Today we are looking at the world of video games. Not just video games but the music. Not just the music but the tracks that just creep you the Hell out. I will say these songs don't all genuinely scare me but some have stories and just have a meaning to me. You may laugh at some of the choices. You may yawn at the choices. This list isn't in any particular order because there are so many songs that I have forgotten over the years, plus I'm terrible at compiling lists. I have tried to vary it up and try and look at a whole variety of games. Oh and by the way, I blatantly stole this idea from a Bloody Disgusting post recently so you can check it out by checking out link at the bottom of this post.

1. Laughing Octopus- Metal Gear Solid 4- PS3

Nobuko Toda, Shuichi Kobori, Kazuma Jinnouchi

Okay to start this list off we are looking at a game from one of the greatest franchises of all time. I love Metal Gear Solid. Ever since I kind of forced my cousin into buying Metal Gear Solid: Sons Of Liberty I have been hooked. OK, I missed MGS the first time round but I have loved it ever since that day. This track is more fast paced than scary but just the whole situation in the game mixed with this really had me on edge. The whole series is full of genuinely creepy moments and the scene where Laughing Octopus goes into her manic laughing fit after the battle and this track is one of those moments.

2. Save Theme- Resident Evil 4- Gamecube
Misao Senbongi, Shusaku Uch

The Resident Evil game franchise is fantastic. Even the modern Resident Evils are fun. As a lover of zombies, Capcom could bring out a pile of shit of a Resi game and I would still enjoy it. Resident Evil 4 although not my favourite, is a damn good game and welcome change in direction to the series plus it has one of the most hauntingly creepy yet somewhat beautiful pieces of music from the series. The save rooms in the games give you a chance to catch your breath and prepare but with this track playing in the background, it dawns on you that you have got to get back out there and kick some zombie arse!

3. Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time- Shadow Temple- N64
Koji Kondo

The N64 is hands down my favourite console of all time. I have so much love for that cartridge based piece of love! Some of my greatest video game experiences and memories belong to this console. Nintendo may not be the company they used to be but they still have the imagination and the talent they always had. I remember the excitement I felt when waiting for this game. The sheer wonder of the universe I was in whilst playing it and the amazement at playing through this for the millionth time finding secrets and just having fun. This game seriously had its creepy moments (Jesus Christ those zombies where just terrifying!). This track sums it up perfectly, the strange atmosphere of some of the places you visit. Koji Kondo is one of the greatest video game composers ever and this just showcases it.

4. Silent Hill 2- Red Pyramids- PS2

This is probably hands down the scariest franchise in video game history. This is also the first of 3 songs taken from Silent Hill games. I could have a list filled purely with Silent Hill songs. Silent Hill 2 is one of the deepest gaming experiences I have ever had. Dreading every corner and every door left unopened... even on your billionth playthrough. The chases with Pyramid Head and probably the most compelling thing is reading up about what the different situations and enemies represent to the different characters in the game. You have one of the most interesting and sexually repulsive pieces of gaming in history. Filled with symbolism and metaphor, genuinely fascinating stuff. This track is from the final fight with the 2 Pyramid Heads and holy crap what a climax. I was terrified during that battle. I was terrified all the way through the game.

5. Super Mario Kart- Ghost Valley- SNES

This is the part where you laugh. This track back in the day? Yeah, it kinda creeped me out when I was a nipper. The sheer minimalism and the high pitched drones. Nowadays, I could play this circuit and just be angry at how horrible I take the corners that don't have barriers but every now and then, the small smile on my face will appear when I think of the times as a child playing this and being creeped out.

6. Silent Hill -Blood Tears- PS1

The second Silent Hill song to appear on this list and for good reason. I still remember the day I bought this piece of gaming history. I was at Toys R Us spending my birthday money. I picked up a copy of the fantastic Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon on the N64 and this. What a nasty shock I got when I played this the first time and crapping myself when I was about to die in what turns out to be a dream. Yeah, aspects like the voice acting (Radio. What's going on with that radio?) do age this game a bit and take that edge off but this is still a damn creepy game. Am I the only one who took an extended break when I received the "Got to the school" note? This song stands out to me because of teh whole situation that's happening. If you have yet to play the game I won't spoil it but this is probably one of the saddest and cruelest moments in gaming history and with this track playing over the top, what an experience, especially first time round.

7. Legend Of Zelda: Windmill Hut- N64
Koji Kondo

Back to some Ocarina Of Time goodness and this is probably the strangest entry to the list and also one of the strangest and surreal moments in the game. It's a simple tune that loops and loops and loops. Why does this still kind of creep me out to this day? It's just so damned strange to me! The guy just playing this song all day on his own in the windmill. It just doesn't sit right with me. I adore this song and it is probably one of my favourites from the incredible Koji Kondo score. If you haven't played this game, you guys are really missing out.

8. Manhunt- View Of Innocence- PS2

Rockstar Games, how I love you. You brought us the GTA franchise, Max Payne, L.A Noire, Red Dead Redemption and one of my all time favourite games, Manhunt. I remember buying this with my silver PS2 back in the day (it was an early Christmas present and apparently the silver PS2 was a quieter console than the standard one, thanks for the BS Sony!). I also picked up Sandinista! by The Clash but that's another story. Playing this for the first time and witnessing something so brutal was fantastic. This game got hated on but I say well done Rockstar for bringing gaming to a new level. Craig Connors fantastic ambient yet violent score just made this game perfection. I am picking this song not just as a single track but as a symbol of the whole soundtrack which just throws you right in the atmosphere. Hiding behind corners waiting for a masked scumbag waiting to try out the crowbar... what a thrill. I adore this game. So much in fact that I am actually writing a film adaptation that will probably never happen. Maybe there's a Let's Play for my Youtube channel in the future?

9. Super Mario World- Ghost House- SNESKoji Kondo

I know, another Super Mario song! What is wrong with me? Fuck me right? Guys, don't deny this track didn't at least creep you out a tiny little bit when you where a kid! Don't deny this track made you want to just get the hell out of the ghost house and find Yoshi again (why did Mario just leave Yoshi outside all the time? Is he not house trained?). When this track speeds up because you are running out of time, again, don't deny you where pumped just a little. Maybe it's me? Oh well, let's move on!

10. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis- Nemesis Fight Songs- PS1
Masami Ueda, Saori Maeda

To finish the list we aren't really ending on the scariest track or anything like that but we are talking about the best Resident Evil game which has probably one of the greatest bad guys in video game history. He scared the shit out of us (when he jumps through the window in the police station, I actually paused the game, ran downstairs and had a time out) but he also amazed the hell out of us. He even, if you where trying to kill him on every encounter probably annoyed the hell out of us. A persistent bastard that was so overpowered at the start but just got raped in later fights because of ice rounds. Yeah, on the surface he's a flawed soul but zombies and mutated creations aren't perfect, look what happened to Michael Jackson (HA! Say too soon to that bitches!) right? This track terrified me the first time and still makes me dread moving on to a new screen when I revisit this classic. What a track for such a guy! STARS!

There it is guys, my list of 10 songs that I think are some of the scariest pieces of video game music of all time. They don't all have the same affect on me now as they did back then but they will always be in the back of my mind. My Day At The Munich Film Festival 2012

Recently, I spent the day in Munich for the Munich Film Festival 2012. The festival ran from the 29th June up until the 7th July. I went on the Thursday with my better half. It was thanks to her that i had this opportunity because she studies Film Criticism and students where able to get passes at a great discounted price. We ventured out with the intention of catching an early afternoon screening of a film called Le Cochon De Gaza ( English title not translated but under the name of When Pigs Have Wings) which was a German dubbed only version of a film about a man who lives between Israel and Palestine. He goes fishing and catches a pig.  Of course being between Palestine and Israel… Pigs aren't exactly the most "desirable" creatures, if you know what I mean. The film basically follows the guy becoming friends with the pig. Now, although that sounds hilarious, our tiredness took over so we slept for another hour. Yeah, shoot me. When we finally decided to set off, we took the train, enjoyed the scenery and finally made it to Munich which is a gorgeous city. Full of pretentious people but gorgeous all the same. After winning the battle with probably the most confusing train systems ever we finally made it to the building where we got our passes and to our joy, a nice big bag of swag.

 As you can see there was a hell of a lot of nice swag for Jeanny and I. Cosmetics that we could easily sell for €40+, some awesome 3D glasses from Sky, A hefty coffee table book version of the festival program, a cute little hand made notebook showcasing the Italian cinema at the festival and the mints and sweets. Not bad at all huh? That put a smile on our faces before we had even began to watch films. After marvelling at our swag for a while, we decided to work out what we wanted to watch so we could get tickets. Our main intention was to watch Killer Joe (William Friedkin) and 360 (Fernando Meirelles) as Jeanny needed to watch and critique these films for her course. Unfortunately, tickets where sold out so we had to look through the program and find some other films to watch. We found ourselves some nice little films.

WELCOME TO PINE HILL
(2012, dir: Keith Miller)

Now when you mention docudrama to me… I usually slap my face and sigh. Don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic examples out there but most of the time they are pretentious and dull. Welcome To Pine Hill however, did not fall under that description. The story follows a recently reformed drug dealer and gang member called Shannon Harper (actually played by himself) who has a somewhat steady job for an insurance company. Down the line he finds out some devastating news that makes him want to make peace with his past and the people he used to know and hang with. To tell you more about the story would do this film a real injustice. A powerful piece of film making that not only tells the devastating story of Shannon and the people in his life but also has an equally powerful message. From a technical point of view, this is a fantastically shot film, the handheld camera actually does what it intends to do and makes the audience feel (sometimes painfully and awkwardly" connected to Shannon's world. Minor complaints are some of the shots linger on too much which I understand symbolises the pain of our main character but it jet made the film run a little too long. Don't get me wrong, this film had me invested all the way through, especially with the fantastic, improvised performances from all the cast involved. Overall, this is one of the most genuinely touching and devastating films that I have seen in a long time and made me think a lot about some of the things in my life. You can't enjoy a film like this of course because the subject matter isn't enjoyable but this is a damn fine film that will have you hooked from start to finish. As far as I know, there is no information with regards to who owns the distribution rights for this film here in the UK for home release but all i can say is, there needs to be a deal done as soon as possible because people need to see this film. Thanks to this film I have also become aware of the Brooklyn Film Makers Collective. What more can I say about this film? It's not perfect by any means but it's a triumph all the same.

After being blown away by the screening we booked our tickets for the next film we wanted to watch but the screening was in a few hours so we decided to go for something to eat. Jeanny suggested a nice steakhouse called Maredo which is a chain in Germany. Being the hopeless, old fashioned romantic that I am, I thought it would be nice if we ate outside and absorbed the sunshine and the gorgeous architecture of Munich. That went well until we where struck by one of the most epic thunderstorms I have seen for a while. We fought the weather and finished our meal (which for me was a marinaded chicken steak with fries and a side dish of garlic bread… oh wait this isn't a food post!) like two mad people. So after defying a storm, we quickly made our way to our next screening which was a blast from the past.

 STORMY MONDAY
(1988, dir: Mike Figges)

As part of the film festival, one of the main events was honouring the work and career of Melanie Griffith. Aside from this film there where a few other titles being screened. Films such as Something Wild as Working Girl to name just a couple. Now, why pick a film like this to watch at a festival? Well let me put it this way. You have a cast that mainly consists of Sting, Tommy Lee Jones, Sean Bean and Melanie Griffith and it's set in Newcastle! How could we not spend the night watching a film from the 80's that stars Sting and is set in Newcastle? I won't go into much detail regarding the story as this is a fairly old film that's been reviewed time and time again by better reviewers than I. All I will say is that is a great little story about corruption, betrayal, death and jazz! You have got Sting playing as a cool, foul mouthed owner of a jazz club (yes, there is a scene with Sting playing the double bass). Sean Bean who plays as your average Joe who gets a job cleaning at Sting's club… but becomes his right hand man. Tommy Lee Jones plays as a witty, sharp Texan businessman who wants Sting's club and you have Mlelanie Griffith who plays as call girl who sleeps with people for Tommy Lee Jones but falls in love with Sean Bean. Yeah, I'm sure you can see what happens. What you have is a funny, smart drama that is worth a watch if you haven't done so already. Has that classic, late 80's English film that you all know and love. Not bad at all…. did I mention it stars Sting?

Well, those where the films that I caught at the Munich Filmfest. Yeah, I could have gone to other days but Jeanny was away for the first few days and could you imagine me trying to navigate Germany's  rail system? I could have joined Jeanny for the Friday but let's just say my stomach decided to be a mean son of a bitch so I had to stay at home… thank goodness I have a cute cat to keep me company. Overall, I enjoyed my day there and looking through the program, I have so much inspiration for films to watch.

SOUTHSIDE 2012: A Review

 Well this is being posted up later than planned. I'm actually writing this the day after our journey home but due to internet issues while I was away… going to be up late, not that it matters of course. I have of course just spent the weekend at the Southside Festival in Germany. I spent the weekend with my beautiful girlfriend and her awesome friend Seppster. It was overall, amazing! I have been to many festivals before but never actually camped for a whole one. A weekend full of great music, uncomfortable beds, fear of using toilets and all round good times with everything in between. I figured that I need to blog more and a what a perfect time to do a run down of the bands/ artists I had the pleasure of watching.

FRIDAY

BUSY P

Last time I saw Busy P was at the Warehouse Project in Manchester a couple of years back. Unfortunately I wasn't too impressed with his song selection. I had however, seen him a year earlier at the same place and he was amazing. In a nutshell, he was more amazing than the first time. Having to deal with one of his decks breaking all the time, like a true champ he carried on and pumped out some great tunes. I had dragged my girlfriend to see him, wasn't really her thing but she enjoyed it. Busy P! What the fuuuuuck!?

DIE ARTZE

Die Artze are my girlfriend's favourite band and she has seen them countless times. I was first introduced to these guys through her early on in our relationship and even though they of course sing in German, they are still enjoyable and my God, do they know how to put on  show for their fans. Three talented musicians full of charisma and full of genuine wit… plus Farin the bassist drinks tea on stage. What's not to love? Oh and a little bit of trivia, Die Arzte where the first of 2 acts at Southside who used a 9/11 reference. Seems legit.

JUSTICE

Oh Gaspard, I still have a worryingly big amount of love for you but sort the hair out. I miss your shorter curly… oh wait… Justice are one of my favourite acts of all time. This is the third time I have seen them live. The first time was their first run of live shows, the second a DJ set at Warehouse Project and this third time with their newer show. All I can say is that seeing Justice live is an experience that everyone must try. Great sound and an amazing light show. This show is a lot better than their first run but I have to say [SPOILER ALERT] I do miss Masters Of Puppets being their finale. Gaspard and Xavier, thank you, it was amazing!

SATURDAY

BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB

This was Seppster's choice and I have to say I thought it was damn good. My dad has told me about these guys for a few years but I never got round to checking them out properly aside from their more popular songs. This was a great way to be introduced properly, I shall be inducting these guys to my prestigious itunes music library sometime soon.

K.I.Z

Another German act suggested by my girlfriend. I was only intending on seeing a couple of songs to pass the time before another act started but after listening to the "gangster" lyrics lovingly translated by my girlfriend and the genuinely awesome music. I enjoyed it. Not to be taken seriously at all and from I gather the guys are just having fun and being very ironic with their songs about fucking your mother and other family friendly activities. Give these guys a listen, they're fun!

THE MARS VOLTA

Only caught the last 20 minutes of their set because of K.I.Z. I have to say, not really heard too many songs from these guys aside from the ones that used to play on MTV2 and the indie music channels that used to be on Sky. From what I had heard, I pictured that this would be epic and fr the most part it was. Some great music but like I said, only saw the last couple of songs. I shall be having a further listen soon though.

THE SHINS

Shiny happy music for people who love to wear flannel shirts and buy fair trade food… oh and think of Starbucks as a statement of their place in society. That being said, I love Starbucks (Caramel Machiatio is my official coffee) and I love The Shins. Not because it's cool to do so but because they create great music and their live show was very good. You probably love The Shins so I don't need to say more. Great stuff.

THE CURE

Another highlight for me and an even bigger highlight for my girlfriend. We both love The Cure and Robert Smith and to share a moment like this with the one you love stays with you man. A great set mixing the classics with the new. Not too familiar with recent stuff but hearing Robert Smith's fantastic voice singing our favourites was amazing. He still has a great voice and props to him for keeping the same look and not going all clean on us. Smith seems like a genuinely beautiful person and his almost childlike innocence is refreshing. If you haven't please go see The Cure if you can. Love Catsssssssss!

NEW ORDER

One of those "You have to at least once in your life…." moments. Being a MASSIVE fan of electronic music and a lover of the city of Manchester… this was amazing for me. I remember my dad playing stuff like Smiths, Joy Division, New Order… (you know the artists awesome dads like) all the time as a child. Joy Divions helped me learn guitar instead of going down the "Smoke On The Water" route. Seeing songs like "Blue Monday", "Temptation" as well as classic Joy Division songs such as "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is something for the heart to behold. It's a real shame Hooky isn't a part of it anymore but it doesn't matter because a loofa these producers nowadays and their pre teen followers don't come anywhere near as special as New Order, arguably one of the most important bands of all time, especially for electronic music. Another reason why this was so special for me was because I again, shared it with the one I love. You can't ask for more. Oh and thank you dad if you are reading for giving me the ability to appreciate great music.

SUNDAY

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL

"Just leave him alone because the boy's bad news…." These guys where awesome. Full of charisma a great catalogue of songs. Again, a band that I knew because of a couple of songs and again, a band who will be gracing the prestigious Mondo Squallido music library sometime soon. A real fun performance and I don't know the frontman's but you sir are one cool motherfucker.

WOLFMOTHER

Very solid and enjoyable set. I am not the biggest Wolfmother fan but I do like them a lot. There was a crazy girl next to us who was either French or on good drugs who enjoyed this a lot more than probably anyone else did. Aside from constantly standing on mine and my girlfriend's toes… I salute your…. mental side. I think you need good beer or evidently, good drugs to really appreciate Wolfmother. Not bad but can't say I remember much…

RISE AGAINST

One of those bands who you have no fucking idea who they are but you've heard their songs all time. From moody teenagers who think they have lived to flicking through channels like Kerrang and Scuzz on Sky. One of my girlfriend's favourites so of course I will give it a try and a try is all I gave it. Only saw the first two or three songs because I was again waiting for another act. I have to say, not bad. Don't think I'll be racing to the nearest record store but if Jeanny's got a CD or two I'll have a go.

SEBASTIAN

OK. Fisrt things first. THIS WAS THE GREATEST FUCKING THING I SAW AND LISTENED TO!!!! I fucking love SebastiAn. One of my favourite producers ever and one of my face Ed Rec Cru members. Just his whole middle finger to modern and popular electronic music is amazing. He uses sounds that I have never heard used before in a way that they shouldn't actually work but they do. SebastiAn and Oizo seriously need to collab more or at least release stuff together because that would literally blow up the world. Sorry Rise Against but I definitely made the right choice here. The only act I saw on my own and I'm kind of glad because I danced like a man possessed. To put my thoughts on this live experience in a paragraph is just impossible but believe me when I say that you NEED to experience SebastiAn and you need to do it now. I knew the live show was going to be amazing because his music live is amazing and after seeing him DJ at Warehouse Project at 4 in the morning when everyone is fucked and literally having 10 seconds of droning, distorted noise building up, killing your ears at the start of his DJ set while he continues to give the middle finger to the audience and even lying down smoking a cir… yeah I have gone off track but Jesus, GO SEE SEBASTIAN NOW! Oh and another bit of trivia… contained the second 9/11 joke/ reference. CTFO!

BLINK 182

Remember right at the start of this run down I said I dragged Jeanny to Busy P? Well, this was my "punishment" if you will. I will happily go on record to say that I never have and never will be a fan or a lover of the music of Blink 182. That being said, this was actually a great performance. The fans loved it, Blink knew it, they milked it… everyone loved it. A lot more enjoyable than expected. Plus, this also had a special feel to it because not only did it take me back to my youth, more importantly the skateboarding (I would have been better than Rodney Mullen if I would have carried on) but the fact that Jeanny was lost in the music of band who she adores… it was a gorgeous situation to be in. Call me old fashioned but moments like this make life amazing. Oh by the way, I gave up watching Stone Roses to see Blink…. don't worry, never really cared for the Stone Roses anyway.

So there you have it, a rather impressive list of acts if I do say so myself. Aside from the great music, it was just a great experience all round. Spending time like this with awesome people and just living in filth was awesome. I was always skeptical of the festival experience but I have to say I rather enjoyed it. If the information is still on the site I will be putting the link down below so you can see who else played. I had an awesome time and have moments that will stay with me. Jeanny if you are reading this, our first festival together was amazing and I can't wait for more!

Because I am feeling the love right now, I thought I would share a few pointers and give my words of wisdom to you guys:

1. Girls, don't dress like you're going to be included in a street fashion article, you just look stupid. Boys, now is the perfect time to wear women's clothing and customise your own, it's comfortable and you are allowed!

2. Tinned ravioli is love in a tin.

3. It may be hard at first but overcoming the fear of festival toilets is a must.

4. note to self… I need to make a music system from a car CD Player and some speakers… that shit looked and sounded awesome.

Innerspace Volume 7: Kissed By The Cosmic Sun

Hello one and all, greetings from a sun soaked Germany. From the sounds of it, you could be having nice weather too which is great. It's been a really busy month here at Mondo Squallido. Lapping up all the weather, spending time with the lady and working on some new projects here. Hope you are all having a gorgeous time with friends and family. Hopefully, this feels as good for you as it did for me compiling it. Hopefully this selection of tracks will be the perfect soundtrack to the start of your summer. Innerspace Volume 5: Cosmic Journey To The German Lands

Well, it's been a long time since the last compilation. Well, we missed a month but still, apologies for that. February has been something of a hectic month for Daniel and I. Myself, February was the month of my birthday and the month when the love of my life spent some time with me which was gorgeous. I was intending on doing an anti Valentines Day compilation because you don't need a card company to write a message for your loved one. I don't know why I decided not but, maybe it was uni work being a pain. Daniel however has been involved in some exciting projects that are going rather well which is amazing and thoroughly deserved, Unfortunately, Daniel, my disco brother in crime is not going to be helping me pick tracks because this is rather an impromptu compilation and is actually a personal subject.

This month's compilation has got a European feel to it. Volume 5 has a German flavour. Why Germany do you ask? Well, my girlfriend is from Germany and I thought that (even though she doesn't really like disco) I would give tribute to (yep, cheese factor turned to 11) her. Not only that but Germany has given so many great things like brilliant beer, spaltter films, scary morality tales for children and of course some fantastic music. Of course I jest, Germany is a fantastic cultural hot spot and of course is home to the bestest lady in the world!

This time I'm going to treat you to 12 fantastic pieces of musical bliss. Everything from some good old disco hits to some classic krautrock and of course some Hi NRG Europop and everything in between. Some songs and artists you may know and some you may not. Some of these tracks only came about while researching so I have discovered some great tracks and I hope that at the very least, you will too. So let's stop this rambling and get on with the goods:

Little Darlings (1980) Review

 Hello guys and girls. Today I thought I would review a film that I heard about a good while a go and only just recently got round to watching. Yes, after seeing this piece of amazing film I did slap myself repeatedly for being a big scuzzy dummy. Why do they I always seem to do this? I hear of so many great films on good authority and get round to them at a snails pace. Regardless, I am so happy that I did take the plunge and find a download of this gem that is yet to get a DVD release.

I first became of this film thanks to a good friend of mine, Robin Bougie who of course is the genius behind Cinema Sewer and reason why my pockets seem to be empty because of all the fantastic films he has turned me on to. However, that was last year. Recently on Facebook it was brought to my attention that this film was being shown on the TCM channel in America so of course being here in crappy old England we weren't able to see it so of course I had to the right thing to do and find a copy online so let me stop rambling on and actually let you guys know what I think.

 Little Darlings was made in 1980 and directed by Ronald F. Maxwell who hasn't really got that much worth mentioning to his credit aside from the T.V movie; Parent Trap 2. The stars of the show are Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol who star as two 15 year old girls. Kristy plays as Angel. Angel is your typical street wise kid who likes nothing more than a good old smoke and has a smart mouth to boot. Tatum however plays as Ferris who is the cute rich kid. Both girls are being sent to a summer camp called Camp Little Wolf. Aside from our main stars there is also a strong supporting cast including a young Matt Dillon who comes into play about halfway through the film.

 The main premise of this film is basically Angel and Ferris trying to lose their virginity while at camp. The conversation comes up about virginity and a bet is made involving Angel and Ferris... a nice little betting racket, take note pre teens! Of course in typical movie fashion, our two main characters don't like each other so the bet is almost just as important for them as it is for the other girls. We also now have team Angel and team Ferris as the remaining girls try and aid their chosen competitor by giving them advice on such things as who and what to look for.

 After the girls have found their potential cherry poppers this is where their trials and tribulations begin. Ferris picks Gary who is the mature camp counsellor played by Armand Assante. Angel sets her sights on the handsome, long haired rebel Randy who is played by Matt Dillon. What happens over the next few scenes mixes between some really well written and genuinely funny banter between all the girls who you can just tell where having just as much fun in character and behind the scenes and of course the equally well written and played courtship between the girls and their chosen men. Both however have completely different success.

 With Ferris trying to get the older guy, you know already that her chances are pretty darn slim but does she give up? No way! In fact some of her actions in these parts are enough to melt any boys hearts, imagine if I saw this when I was 15... oh boy. Angel however has great success with Randy but as it progresses and comes up to the big moment you can really feel how scared she is about the big moment and you do genuinely feel for her. You feel for both characters. It's a beautiful thing when a film comes along and the majority of the characters are likeable. Not only that but I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys can relate to everyone in this film.

 I won't ruin what happens for you guys because you really do have to check this out for yourselves. One thing I love about this film is how the characters develop. Seeing the different dynamics of each character, seeing the characters evolve. Right from the start you know that Angel and Ferris will become friends but the film handles t so well that it's refreshing and not just "well she's going to do that... she's going to say this... then they will do this.." Of course there are a lot of things that happen along the way but experiencing them for yourself is part of the journey of this film. It's a great story that has been told countless times but again, the way it's handled is brilliant. Full of some great banter between the girls too. A film that has it's funny parts and it's sad parts but touching all the way through.

 Another thing about this film is the soundtrack. I'm pretty sure I heard the theme tune from The Warriors playing faintly in the background during one of the first cabin scenes with all the girls but that's not the best of it. There are songs by Blondie, John Lennon, Supertramp to name a few. It all just gells really well with the film. If you like your teen comedies then you should give it a go. Think of Meatballs mixed in with a pinch of Stand By Me and Goonies and a faint hint of Hardbodies and you have Little Darlings. It's not a teen comedy that uses dick jokes and gross out gags to get the laughs. In fact there is really none of that in this film. This is how a teen film should be like. It's got a story and characters that people can relate too. It has a real feel good mood to it thrown in with some touching, dramatic moments as if the film is almost a 15 year old kid itself.

So there you have it guys. I could say more and go in to detail but what would the point be? Why ruin the experience? All you need to know is that this is a must see. A story that deals with a lot of quite serious topics even if some are small plot points and film that really shows the meaning of true friendship. Even with it's 15 rated certificate, I do think that this film can be enjoyed by young and old a like. So if you want to laugh, cry and even be taken back to when you where fifteen or even if you want to relate to a character, this is a film for you. A great cast, great story and well directed. I could watch this film over and over again. This really does need a DVD release right NOW!

My Top 5 DVDs and Blurays Of 2011

2011 is well and truly over. It's that time of the year when every blogger, Youtuber.... EVERYBODY does a list of their favourite films or releases of the year. I thought that since I have already done this on Youtube I would do a kind of follow up on the blog. For anyone who hasn't watched the video or any of my videos I will embed it down below for you guys to check out (subscribe if you haven't done so already or your 2012 WILL definitely be over!). In a nutshell, this year has been OK for releases. A lot of stuff didn't interest me. A lot of stuff was too expensive. A lot of stuff became hard to find but I am pretty happy with how my collection of titles released this year. They didn't make the list but one of my favourite labels this year has to be the mighty Arrow. I could have filled the list with Arrow titles but I though... EVERYONE loves Arrow so they didn't make it. So without further or do, let's get started.

5. BFI Dual Format release of Alice directed by Jan Svankmajer (1988)

This is at number 5 because I actually haven't got round to watching it yet. Yes, starting off with a title I own but haven't watched yet. Why is it on the list you ask? It's packed full of special features and short films, it looks amazing on the shelf and from the clips I have seen, it looks and sounds gorgeous. The BFI release so many great, high quality editions of some fantastic films. Everything from the Post Office documentaries of war time England to recent European gems. The BFI is great full stop and this will not be the last film I pick up from their back catalogue.

4. Camera Obscura DVD release of Libidomania by Bruno Mattei (1979)

I bloody adore this film! As soon as I found out that there was a proper release of this film coming out, I had to pre order it as soon as possible and boy was I right to do so. This is one of Bruno Mattei's fantastic mondo films and in my opinion, the greatest mondo film of all time. What makes this release so special is the love and effort gone into it. Packed full of features like deleted scenes, trailers, an essay and an amazing audio commentary. It is also one of the nicest looking packages I have seen for a while with it's fantastic contemporary looking slipcover art. The picture and sound is really nice as well, especially for a film like this. One of the greatest things I have bought all year!

3. Blue Underground 2 disc bluray of Zombie by Lucio Fulci (1979)

Another one of my all time favourites. Fulci for me is one of the greatest directors of all time. This is one of the greatest films of all time and Blue Underground have created one of the finest horror bluray's from this year. This film has never looked or sounded so good. Packed to it's undead rim with special features (most of them ported from different releases) and presented beautifully with a great cover design and an amazing slipcover. This is a must for all horror fans. Especially due to the fact that it's a multi region blu and is also on DVD so everyone can enjoy it. Take note all you labels out there. This is how it's done!

2. Distribpix 2 disc DVD of Radley Metzger's The Private Afternoons Of Pamela Mann (1974)

This is a special title for me. Not just because this was kindly given to me for review from Ste at Distribpix but because this now one of my all time favourite adult features from porn's greatest era. This is a sublime release that again, companies should take note. This is how you release a film full stop. Especially all you companies that distribute "legitimate" films. This presented beautifully. Packed again with some amazing special features (I mean come on! Porn commentary tracks!? Yes please!) and not not only that but it looks and sounds fantastic. A restoration done right. The film itself is just as amazing. A real gem in my collection and boy I can't wait for the release of Naked Came The Stranger now! Not for everyone but all my fellow classic smut fans... you HAVE to buy this!

1. Blaq Out 3 disc set of Rubber by Quentin Dupieux (2010)

That's right gang. Rubber takes the top spot. I adore this film. This film is probably the best film I have seen in recent years. Terribly underrated and horribly misunderstood by the majority of the people who watched it. I really got this film, I enjoyed the wackiness, I enjoyed the awesome special effects. I found this film genuinely funny and totally appreciated the satire and message. Not only that but it is shot beautifully and has a great soundtrack from Quentin and Gaspard Auge. If you love Oizo, then you will truly appreciate this. The edition I picked up is just amazing. It works as a great edition and also as a great design piece thanks to brilliant artwork from SO ME. This French edition totally wipes the floor with the generic American and UK release. The third disc is Quentin's first film; Nonfilm which again I love. Nice special features too including the best interview I have ever seen. Words can't describe how much I love this addition to my collection. It just had to have top spot!

So there you have it guys. There is my top 5 releases from 2011. I'd do some honourable mentions but that would take all bloody day! For anyone who is interested, feel free to check out my video version of this list. Go out and buy them all. You have to!

Innerspace NYE Special

This compilation is dedicated to my beautiful girlfriend who without her, I wouldn't be inspired to create this series and any other projects. Love you so much baby.

Wow. I bet you never thought you would see another post from me this year? Well, truthfully, neither did I. That's until my Innerspace partner in crime Daniel suggested just after posting the Christmas compilation that we do a New Years compilation. Of course! It makes sense! So after slapping myself in the face repeatedly, I regained composure and plucked into the depths of my brain... and my itunes library. We wanted this compilation to be the grooviest, funkiest jumpin' collection of jams. Stuff that will well and truly make you want to shake, shake, shake, shake your booty. It doesn't matter if you are having a lonely celebration, a small gathering or a grandiose party... these fine cuts of disco... beef (???) will definitely help you all from the start of the party, all the way to the early hours of the new year.

Ouch! My feet are hurting already! Hopefully these tracks will help finish your year and greet a new one in. A real treat for you, your friends... and if so... the cats you are spinning for. Trying to compile a 12 track compilation was tough. Thank goodness Daniel has to suffer too... although, it's all good. Innerspace started out as an alias for my "music" and seeing it grow to a monthly compilation is great. Even though it's still in it's infancy, the response we have had with this is really rewarding. What is truly rewarding however is being able to work alongside cats like Daniel and essentially just compile a nice selection of songs for people to hear. The whole process is in itself is rewarding. I get to spend time once a month rummaging through my library, hear some great choices from Dan... some new, some old favourites. Music is a powerful art form and has been with us from the dawn of time in one way or another. So before I end up sounding like the old fart on the chair delving deep inside and filling the room with words of wisdom, I want to thank each and everyone of you guys who have read these posts, downloaded the comps and took time out of your lives to listen to some great music and enjoy the work Dan and I have put together. I would also like to thank Dan for being my soul brother and partner in crime. If it wasn't for you Dan this wouldn't be as fun as it is. I would also like to thank again, my beautiful girlfriend Jeanny who has made this latter half of the year amazing for me.

Innerspace Volume 3: Festive Spice

Hello everyone... oh wait, I need to pop on my Santa hat and do this properly. Seasons greetings readers, lovers, disco deviants... whatever or whoever you are. Thank you for stopping by. I hope everyone's festivities are in full swing and you and your own are having a jolly good shin dig. Ok, enough of the festive cheer, I'm too much of a Scrooge... but I do have a heart of gold because it's time for more Innerspace goodness. Again, Daniel and I have compiled some fantastic tunes for you all. This time however, in the true theme of Christmas we are treating you that little bit more by compiling a few more tracks than usual. See, I'm not all bad!

So what is this months theme? Christmas songs? Alternative Christmas songs? No!? Not even covers of Christmas songs!? Nope, Daniel and I... actually no, Daniel deserves the credit for this months theme. We are not going to give you a krautrock renditions of classic Christmas carols (although... I seriously hope such things exist) or a smooth, R'n'B renditions of Christmas classics. Not anywhere close people. For this month we are seriously treating you with some nice, hot musical treats. We are warming up your feet, swapping your eggnog with a cocktail or some rum. We are taking you on a trip to warmer pastures where the hectic Christmas shopping is being replaced with the laid back vibes of the dance hall.

In the third installment of Innerspace you are going to be treated to some nice African, Latin, North American vibes. You see that snow covering your car? That's now beach towel on the golden sands of the Ivory Coast. You see those overly excited children tugging at your loved ones sleeve? That's the sultry, Latina barmaid bringing you some tropical delights. I think you get the picture now? Are you sitting back yet? Good. The music is going to speak for itself so I am going to stop yapping and let you enjoy this next hour or so. We aren't even going to talk about the songs because hey, it's Christmas... the best thing is the surprise right?

Innerspace Volume 3

Born Innocent 1974 Review

 Hello readers once again. Today we have another for you. If you haven't already guessed we are reviewing a film called Born Innocent (I hate when people say smart arse things like that) starring the fantastic Linda Blair amongst some other great talent but notably Joanna Miles, Richard Jaeckal and Kim Hunter. There are some other names in there that you might recognise. The film is a T.V film directed by a guy called Donald Wrye who made a lot of T.V films and documentaries. He also was nominated for 2 Oscars so you are in good hands with this one and I know for a fact that I will be checking out more of his work as I don't think I have seen any of his other work (slap my wrist now) and after seeing this... Wow! Like all of my reviews I don't want to retell you the film and give away most of what happens but this will be slightly more information compared to my video review (embedded down below if you haven't seen it). So I will stop rambling and get on with it.

 I first became aware of this fantastic T.V film whilst searching for VHS covers for a Youtube project. I was just blown away with how kick ass it was and knew I would HAVE to seek this film out. I did and boy was I happy. However, I went in to this with the wrong impression. The image at the start of this review was the first real image I saw before watching and made me think I would be seeing some nice W.I.P exploitation sleaze. It only hit me about 10 minutes in when I realised my sick, depraved thoughts about potential Linda Blair hotness in this film was quashed when I worked out Linda was around 15 when she made this. Yes I need help, don't judge. I have to say that I'm happy that the film turned out the way it did.

 Essentially, this is a film about Linda Balir's character who is a runaway. She starts off spending the night in the cells with adults until she is taken to court the next day to find out she's being sent to a girl's reformation centre. Upon her arrival she has to go through the procedure of being searched and showered where we realize that she runs away from for good reason. After a rather powerful scene where Chris breaks down we are introduced to some of her fellow inmates. What I will say about this film before I go on is that there is slight elements of the W.I.P genre in this film. We have the innocent character going in, the questionable warden characters and the sharp, potty mouthed inmate characters and of course the themes of lesbianism. This is done however, in a more straight and toned down way than let's say a Roger Corman W.I.P flick. The first real moment in the film is of course another W.I.P trait, the rape scene. All I will say for this is that there is a hard to watch rape scene which involves Chris being held down and the use of a broom handle. This again, is tastefully done and is genuinely shocking and you really do feel for Linda Blair's character.

 Aside from the horrible characters we also have the sympathetic teacher played by Joanna Miles who takes a shining towards Chris and starts to forge an almost motherly relationship. This is obvious after Chris tries to escape because of the rape and is thrown in isolation. We have a genuinely touching moment where Chris and the teacher talk and Chris breaks down crying (Linda Blair is fantastic in this film by the way) and crying for her mother. I'd like to see all you manly men hold back the tears for this scene. Chris decides she wants to see her parents so the allow her a 4 day visit. We are introduced to her mother and father played by Richard Jaeckel and Kim Hunter. It all starts off nice and you find yourself happy for Chris. That is until after scenes of her father hitting her mother and hitting Chris. Chris decides to run away again. This time to her older brother. One thing that really got me before she left was the exchange with Chris and her mother where we learn Chris's mother involved the police to save Chris from her father. Again these scenes could have been trashy and exploitative but no, they are done straight and once again in a very powerful way. Once Chris meets her brother it again feels like something good is going to happen but no. Her brother calls the police before they meet and Chris is once again taken back and put into isolation.

 From this point in the film another common trait of the W.I.P genre comes into play, the good girl turning bad. Who can blame her? The amount of stuff Chris has gone through so far would be enough for anybody. Chris develops a relationship with a fellow inmate who is pregnant (again, not in a seedy way but a touching way) which helps her keep her cool. That is until there is a situation in the dining hall which results Chris and her new friend being once again, thrown into isolation. Something terrible happens however which I won't reveal but oh boy has Chris had enough. This switch in mentality and attitude is portrayed brilliantly by Linda Blair. One final notable thing that happens in this film is something that I won't even talk about because quite frankly, I didn't see it coming and again, I don't want to spoil the surprise for you but I will say that the payoff is fantastic. Chris has changed from being the victim to a strong willed girl who doesn't take shit from anybody. Trust me, the ending to this film is fantastic!

 Overall, this is a brilliant little film. The story is great. The characters are great. Linda Blair is just fantastic in this film and is one of her strongest roles. I definitely want to see more of her performances from her younger days because she was a terrific little actress. The evolution of her character is done brilliantly and again full credit goes to Linda. As I stated earlier this is not a sleaze fest like her later W.I.P films. There is however touches of the genre and in some places it does feel like a good old fashioned exploitation piece. I think you have to be a fan of exploitation cinema to truly appreciate this. It might not have been what I was expecting but I'm glad because this is just a genuinely strong, powerful drama that seriously had me at points. I cannot stress how great this film is and again the best part is Linda Blair. I have missed a few things out but you will appreciate it when you watch it. You can pick this up in a region 1 release from the States but you can however watch the whole thing on Youtube. Just check this one out guys, I could have just said that but yeah HAD to at least talk about it!
